CGPA calculation formula in university, engineering exams

CGPA Calculation formula

You often seen a term in university final result called 'CGPA'. In education results this term is really significant. Here we will understand what is CGPA and CGPA calculation formula.

For the benefit of discussion, we have taken examples of CGPA on the basis of Calcutta University's system. But this method is applicable for all educational results in India such as CGPA in engineering, CGPA in semester-based exam.

CU or Calcutta University determines Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) of each semester before calculating your overall grade point average, that is, CGPA.

SGPA is basically the weighted average of grade points earned by a student during a single semester. Know how to calculate SGPA.

Cummulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system

The full form of CGPA is Cummulative Grade Point Average. CGPA is basically the Weighted Average value of Semester Grade Point Averages. To know the CGPA calculation formula see below.

CGPA Calculation Formula

As you know, all the subjects have been assigned a 'Credit'. Credit is none but the importance index or weight of that particular subject. And the total credit of a particular semester is calculated by adding up the credit of the subjects of that semester. To calculate your CGPA, you have to multiply SGPA obtained in a semester with the credit of that particular semester. Likewise, when you determine the product (SGPA obtained × Credit) for all semesters, add them up and then divide by the total credits of the course and you will find your CGPA. For example, let's assume there are six semesters in an undergraduate course and the SGPA obtained by the student and semester credits are as mentioned in the table below:

Semester SGPA obtained Total Credit of the Semester Product (SGPA × Credit)
Semester 1 8.300 24 199.200
Semester 2 7.000 24 168.000
Semester 3 8.500 22 187.000
Semester 4 8.385 24 201.240
Semester 5 7.900 24 189.600
Semester 6 8.000 22 176.000

Therefore, Total of Products = 1121.040 and total of credits are 140.
Hence, CGPA obtained by the student in that particular degree course will be = (Total of Products ÷ Total Credits) = (1121.040 ÷ 140) = 8.007

Calcutta University (CU) represents CGPA upto three digits after decimal. So we have written the value of CGPA as 8.007. Alternatively, it can be written as 8.01.
